SKYPING WITH THE STATES

As Tovia prepares to leave us, she has written a few words of gratitude to Ofelia Barreiro, our Director of Studies, for helping her to organise a wonderful skype session  shared  by  our   Year 11  students   and   Tovia´s classmates in the States.

We share Tovia´s enthusiasm, and hope this will be a long-lasting relationship.

Here is Tovia´s letter:

Hi Ophelia,

I just wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to share what I have been doing here for the past few months with my class in the States.

I am very happy to tell you that I think the skype session went very well- we skyped for over an hour! In the skype session, we used both English and Spanish to communicate- my classmates at GDS (my school in the States) asking questions in Spanish, while my classmates here responding to them in English (because my classmates in the U.S have very limited Spanish knowledge- only studying the language for two years). After the initial question and answer stage, my classmates here performed some of the dances that they will be performing at the end of the year showcase as well as a couple of poems that they have been working on- in English.

I have also received many emails from different administrators and teachers in my school, telling me how impressed they are with my class here, and how they would also love to skype sometime or become pen pals.

Both my classmates here and my classmates in the States are also going to exchange email addresses and facebook addresses- to keep in contact. I am very excited to see where this leads.

Thanks again for this wonderful opportunity and I hope both these amazing schools can keep in contact- even after I return to the states.

PROYECTO MODERNISTA INTERDEPARTAMENTAL

Durante este último trimestre escolar los alumnos de 4º de ESO,  están realizando un proyecto conjunto entre los departamentos de Humanidades y Plástica, basado en la representación, mediante un decorado de luz y color,  de un poema modernista de Rubén Darío.  

El proyecto está en proceso de realización  pero os avanzamos una pequeña muestra.

MIND MAPS: 3º DE ESO

Los alumnos de 3º de ESO están realizando una experiencia conjunta con los departamentos de plástica, Humanidades y música, para conocer la peculiar forma de vida de de las tribus aborígenes de Australia. 

A través de la construcción y decoración de su instrumento sanador el didjeridoo, practicando con las mismas primitivas técnicas pictóricas del punto y la recta en relieve. 

Conociendo su historia y su cultura elaborando mindmaps en la asignatura de ciencias sociales y experimentando con los sonidos pentatónicos y mántricos del sonido armónico, conociendo sus efectos a nivel de los centros de energía de nuestro cuerpo. El objetivo final es elevado, realizar un circulo de sonido para elevar la energía de su colegio.

RECITAL MUSICOTERAPOÉTICO PARA 2º DE BACHILLERATO

Recientemente, los alumnos de 2º de Bachillerato han disfrutado de una sesión musicoterapoética, como regalo sorpresa a poco tiempo del final de su trayectoria en el Colegio. 

La iniciativa ha corrido a cargo de los departamentos de Música y de Humanidades, cuyos profesores Marcos Iglesias y Enrique Jerez seleccionaron música jazz y soul (Roberta Flack, George Michael, Nina Simona, etc.) y poesía universal (Cavafis, Kipling, Coleridge, Machado, etc.) con que distender sus nervios antes de los exámenes finales. 

En un ambiente de profunda serenidad (oscuridad, música de fondo, lectura de poemas), Marcos incrementó el relajo de los alumnos con un breve masaje individual. Minutos después de la sesión, se les hizo reflexionar por escrito y de forma anónima sobre esta experiencia sinestésica; algunas de las opiniones fueron las siguientes:

Me ha parecido una actividad muy interesante y sensual, para entrar en sintonía con uno mismo. La atmósfera que se consigue mediante este tipo de actividades me parece sublime, y rompe con la monotonía del día a día. Enhorabuena por la iniciativa y la idea.

Estas son las típicas cosas que echaré de menos cuando salga de aquí; no solo nos enseñáis lo que viene en los libros: nos hacéis ver cosas que antes pasaban desapercibidas, y es algo que siempre os agradeceré. Gracias por hacer que nos olvidemos de este curso tan estresante por un momento, con la poesía (que me encanta), y el jazz, que me parece genial. Ha sido muy agradable y relajante.

OLYMPIC GAMES

This year the Olympic Games were fantastic. The weather was excellent although the other days were freezing.

We won many medals and we really had a good time. We also met lots of new people. It was a great experience.

Marta won 2 silver medals and a gold one and her classmate Fernando Romo won 3 gold medals in athletics.

It was a great day for both of them and for all their classmates who supported them during the races.

We all feel so proud about their victories.

NEWS FROM THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Recently the Laude Fontenebro Senior School pupils were invited to take part in the Annual Creative Writing Competition. 

The mission of this competition is to further develop our pupil’s writing skills and to encourage emerging writers to show their literary talents. 

This year’s edition attracted entries from Year 8 to Year 12. The categories varied in word length, however, the theme remained the same for all, as did the choice of types of writing, which included letter, email, story, essay and poetry. 

An informal awards ceremony will be held soon. Congratulations to all the winners and all the participants. Well done!
