DÍA DE LA SOLIDARIDAD

El pasado Viernes, volvimos a celebrar El Día de la Solidaridad en secundaria. Tanto alumnos como profesores trajeron tartas, bizcochos o galletas para vender durante el desayuno de la mañana y así, recaudar fondos para la Direct Help Foundation, Asociación con la que colabora nuestro colegio desde hace varios años ya.

Ademas, todos aquellos alumnos que así lo desearon, vinieron en ropa de calle aportando 1€ para la misma causa.

La recaudación en secundaria fue de 374,80€ que estamos seguros será muy bien aprovechada.

Aquí os dejo algunas fotos del desayuno. Muchísimas gracias a todos aquellos que colaborastéis con la causa.

A continuación podemos ver a varias alumnas de 1º ESO con los postres que trajeron.

SCIENCE PROJECTS YEAR 8B.

As I promised you not long ago, my Year 8 students are doing their oral presentations about "the Sound".

Some of them have recorded a video, some of them have built simple devices such as telephones, while others have brought some materials to develop their experiments.

They have demonstrated that every sound we hear occurs because something vibrates, although not all vibrations are perceived as sound.

They have also proved that there are three things needed to produce sound:

   - an emitter or the object that vibrates

  - a material medium that sound can travel or be transmitted through (solid, liquid or gas)

   - a receptor (our ear or a microphone).

They heave learned that the speed at which sound waves travel depends on the characteristics of the medium.

The final projects have been quite original and entertaining, and below there are a few pictures where you can see some of them.

In the next couple of pictures Cristina Conesa tries to create sound just with a wine cup filled up with water.

In the next picture Dharma explained to the class at what speed sound travels.

One of them tried to show us why a laser pointer placed on top of a speaker playing music vibrates, depending on the frequency of the vibration that makes the sound. 

The next pics show one of the last groups during their oral presentation, which has been great as they have covered almost all the topics from the unit, with very simple but interesting experiments(they´ve used balloons, yoghurts, water speakers, and even musical instruments) keeping our attention the whole time.

So I´m very happy with the results and with the commitment shown by the students on this project.

WRITING ESSAYS 2º BACH

Essays are a chance to demonstrate original thinking and impress with written english skills. They are designed to test different things.

  - Knowledge essays test what you have read or learned, making them an important part of the learning process.

    - Comprehension: they test your hability to explain complex concepts and issues.

    - They also test your hability to write a coherent argument.

Characteristics of  perfect essay:

The main characteristic is the original thinking. That doesn´t mean coming up with a new theory, but it means that the essay stands out from the rest, perhaps approaching the topic from a different angle. 

Brilliant essays demonstrate a strong knowledge of the facts as well as they provide a coherent discussion. 

Here are two examples of two different essays made by two of our students of Year 12: Aitor Rodríguez and Ignacio Sánchez.

What could we do to reduce pollution in large cities?

To begin with, pollution has been increasing exponentially all over the world. Overpopulation has created bigger cities, cars and other sources of pollution.

On the one hand, big cities are becoming better organized places where life is now easier than ever. Public transport, clean streets..... All kinds of public services and facilities are making the cities great.

On the other hand, crowded malls, traffic jams and big factories keep polluting the air and keep growing bigger to satisfy the market's demand.

In conclusion, governments should focus on preserving forests, investing in new cleaning energies and improving our recycling system, but also controlling the constructions of polluting car companies and other businesses that are harming the environment.

Should a large amount of money be invested in space travel?

I would like to begin by saying that nowadays, we all know that people need money more urgently than scientific research.

As we can see on the news and even on our own lives, people lose all their money, their houses, jobs... In my opinion, scientific research, such as on space travels, is something optional to human society. Money should be invested in it only when we make sure that almost every human being on earth, has all the basic things like food, a house, medical attention....

Human beings need to learn more and more about future issues, but we cannot forget the base that is society has, so I do not think that a lot of money should be invested in space travel.

VALSAÍN: EXCURSIÓN CNEAM 1º BACH.

El pasado día 13 de febrero los alumnos de 1º Bachillerato fuimos a Valsaín, donde se encuentra la sede del CNEAM, Centro Nacional de Educación Ambiental, donde realizamos un taller muy interesante. 

El taller cosistía en defender distintas posturas sobre el desarrollo de la zona. Una empresa muy grande trata de implantarse en la zona. Los alumnos por grupos defendieron distintos roles: la empresa, las fuerzas políticas,  los vecinos, los verdes...

Antes del debate, realizamos una senda por los alrededores, para observar de primera mano el entorno en el que podrían construirse las instalaciones propuestas por la empresa.

2º DE ESO VISITA EL MONASTERIO DE EL ESCORIAL.

Recientemente, los alumnos de 2º de ESO han visitado el Monasterio de El Escorial, como complemento a la salida que realizaron el pasado noviembre al Palacio Real de Madrid, donde pudieron contemplar la exposición Del Bosco a Tiziano: Arte y maravilla en El Escorial. 

Además, en esta ocasión nuestros alumnos (aparte de la visita convencional dirigida por un guía de Patrimonio Nacional) tuvieron la oportunidad de acceder al área del Monasterio que en la actualidad ocupa la Comunidad Agustiniana, y, guiados por uno de los monjes (el entrañable Padre Samuel), pudieron visitar espacios y obras de arte normalmente vedados al resto de visitantes (sacristía, coro, cuadro de Claudio Coello, etc.).

CINEMA YEAR 11

A couple of weeks ago year 11 students went to the cinema to watch "The bling ring". A film about how drugs, fashion and night life can affect teenagers´ lives in LA.

LIBROFÓRUM DE 3º DE ESO CON FERNANDO MARÍAS. 

En estos días, los alumnos de 3º de ESO han tenido la oportunidad de disfrutar de un encuentro con Fernando Marías, el escritor de la última novela que han leído para la asignatura de Lengua (Zara y el librero de Bagdag). 

El autor dedicó unos minutos a contarnos algunas anécdotas en torno al proceso de redacción de su obra, que interesaron mucho a los alumnos, como se pudo comprobar en la sesión de preguntas posterior, convertida a la postre en un interesante coloquio. 

Finalmente, Marías se prestó a firmar los ejemplares de su novela que habían traído los alumnos, con algunos de los cuales mantuvo animadas conversaciones.
